The music is bubbly while the chorus narrates a woman that maintains a second relationship shrouded in the obscurity of the night. “All I Feel Is Rain” with JID is one of the most upbeat tracks on the album and could easily take off as another popular single for Khalid. Their alternating lines in the chorus and light vocal moaning make for some of the most lowkey and smooth collaboration on the mixtape. There’s “Brand New,” with Los Angeles native QUIN, where the two sing together for most of the song. They reminisce on their relationship, lying in bed listening to one another’s songs, waiting for the other to make the first move. “Voicemail” with Kiana Ledé, which features light vocals, snapping and harmonizing that blends into the beat. His work with the female singers featured are all worth a listen.

These solo endeavors follow a similar style to his previous singles and ultimately don’t stand out as significantly as the collaborations to follow. He can’t really retrace his thoughts, “ which one do you prefer? Sativa or Indica?” It feels like a follow-up to “Young Dumb & Broke” from his debut, a song that shows his musical growth yet retains the sound we fell in love with. “Backseat” paints another car scene, with Khalid reminiscing on his youth when his friends would drive around and get high. The track has a polished repetitive R&B sound that’s accented by guitar plucking between verses and choruses. First up is “Present” where he longs to “ Cruise around town, ride on autopilot,” investing his time in really being present for his lover. On his first mixtape Scenic Drive: The Tape, released last month, he continues using his voice to collaborate with a variety of established R&B acts creating a short but polished collection of songs. He’s gone from a newcomer to collaborating with the likes of Billie Eilish and Calvin Harris to even being picked by Mariah Carey to write and sing on her 2021 holiday single “Fall in Love at Christmas.” His sound has continued to resonate, and his voice is now synonymous with what feels like a dozen or so hits throughout the last five years. When Khalid broke onto the music scene in 2017 with his debut single “Location” we were entranced by the way his smooth vocals slid along seamlessly with the pop and R&B blended beats.
